The View from Here

What do you think of when you think of life in Paris? The Eiffel Tower? A sidewalk café? Strolling along the banks of the Seine? The decidely un-picture postcard-worthy photo above tells the real story. I spent more than eight hours over the past three days on subways and trains in order to drop off and pick up children from various activities. Tomorrow, I'm staying put.

I think of this a lot. The daily grind is so much different than people imagine it...than I imagined it. I have a post halfway written on this very topic, too. It's crazy how much of a role public transportation plays in our everyday existence here.

8 hours out of 72 isn't so bad. Imagine if you had to go to work everyday after dropping them off/picking them up.

At least you are in Paris. I spend too many hours driving my kids around in Palo Alto, Ca.

I used to be an au pair, and that no school Wednesday thing is a nightmare for transportation.

I had two children with collapsible scooters who were scared I was going to leave them (no idea why) so they would cling to my jacket, and a baby in a stroller. Getting on the bus like that to go to swim classes is... interesting to say the least.

The kids were absolutely adorable, but the driver who looks at you and, with zero emotion, informs you that you have to find some way to get off at the back of the bus, regardless of the fact that there are people standing one against the other in the aisle...

Bienvenue à Paris.

Do you do the kid run with strollers? Gotta love the stroller friendly metro!
Nice to meet you by the way!
bisous, La Mom

La Mom: My kids are long out of strollers and with the number of steps in the metro, I am especially grateful!
